Plantas Invasoras
The App against threats to biodiversity
Cooler Planet Award-winning concept, sponsored by BNP Paribas
An application that helps patrol neighborhoods against invasive plants by recording the life cycle of invasive plants, made with the contributions of volunteers.
CONTEXT
This initiative was organized as part of Apps for Good, which is a technological educational program that encourages students in grades 5 to 12 and teachers from all subject areas to develop applications for smartphones or tablets that solve social problems, highlighting the transformative potential of technology in the world and in communities.
APPS FOR GOOD
Apps for Good aims to create a new generation of “digital makers” and “problem solvers” who are not just consumers of technology but also creators.
Apps for Good is part of an international network and was founded in 2010 by Iris Lapinski in London. In 2015, it was implemented in Portugal through a partnership between the Directorate-General for Education and CDI Portugal.
CV INVADERS
It is an application that aims to record invasive plants and their life cycle in a database, as they are one of the worst enemies of biodiversity. This application relies on the participation of citizens who will add images to record invasive plants.
After making the first registration, photos are asked to be taken monthly in order to monitor its development. The app also has useful information about the types of invasive plants, helping the population to identify them.
